On 16th January 1946 Spitfire IIA's P8396 "Bermuda II" and X4067 "Hissar II" of 53 OTU collided in a formation flight, X4067 cutting off the tail of P8396. P8396 crashed at Cross Farm, St Hilary killing the South African pilot. X4067 made a forced landing at the same farm and was repaired in a few days.
On 16th January 2002 St Athan played host to a C-17A Globemaster III of 99Sqdn RAF Brize Norton. This was the first time a "Moose" had visited Saints and ZZ171/171 duly arrived at 08:45 on runway 26. The "heavy" was carrying a special cargo in the shape of Tornado F.3 ZE729/- which had been operating at Stanley in the Falklands with 1435 Flight. The aircraft required some attention and was airlifted to St Athan for overhaul.
