DC.3 EI-ACEF.V

This first landing at Rhoose Airport was an Aer Lingus operated Douglas DC-3D Dakota which was routing on a scheduled service from and returning to Dublin. These flights were transferred by Aer Lingus from the Pengam airport in that area of Cardiff as the facilities were deemed better down the Vale.

Unfortunately no more records for this period of the airports operation are not saved and recorded but it is presumed that the complete fleet of the based Cambrian Air Services as well as the operational Aer Lingus Dakota fleet would have certainly visited Rhoose between this date and early dec 1958 when records are kept.

Listed below is the Cambrian fleet which were on strength for the period 1954-1958. Nominally, Cambrian Air Services fleet moved into Rhoose from Pengam airport in Cardiff during spring of 1954 so I have listed the airframes on reported charge on the 1/5/54 as the transfer date to which they started being operational at Rhoose.

Included are some disposal dates from the fleet.

Auster J/1 Autocrat G-AGYT [sold 56]
Percival P.28B Proctor 1 G-AHEU [sold 6/54]
de Havilland DH-89 Dominie IA G-AJCL [DH.89A Dragon Rapide]
de Havilland DH-89 Dominie I A G-ALZJ [sold 7/56][DH.89A Dragon Rapide
DH.104 Dove 1 G-AIWF [sold 6.57]
DH.104 Dove 1 G-AJOT [sold 11.56]

The following are "unlikely" to have flown to Rhoose and probably disposed off at Pengam Moors.
de Havilland DH-89 Dominie IA G-AKUB [sold 1/55] [DH.89A Dragon Rapide
de Havilland DH-89 Dominie IA G-AKUC [sold 1/55] [DH.89A Dragon Rapide]
de Havilland DH-89 Dominie I A G-ALAT [sold 6/54] [DH.89A Dragon Rapide]
Percival P.28B Proctor 1 G-AHEV [never actually flown by Cambrian]
Percival P.28C Proctor 4 G-ANZI [never actually flown by Cambrian]
Percival P.28C Proctor 4 G-ANZJ [never actually flown by Cambrian]

During November 54 [listed as being on strength at Cardiff on 1/1/55] two Dakota aircraft were bought. These were -:
Douglas DC-3 C-47B Dakota G-AMSX
Douglas DC-3 C-47B Dakota G-AMSW

On May 23 1955 the Company was renamed Cambrian Airways. And subsequently taken on charge were -:
1/3/56 de Havilland DH-114 Heron 2 G-AOGO
1/3/56 de Havilland DH-114 Heron 2 G-AORJ
1/3/56 de Havilland DH-114 Heron 2 G-AOGU

Leased in during February 58 was de Havilland DH-114 Heron 1B G-ANCI [listed as 1/3/58]:

Interestingly, DH.104 Dove 1 G-AKSS was purchased in 1959 and subsequently sold during the same year – however no departure information is logged for this aircraft in 1959 so date for any visit remains unknown.

Flights With Cambrian flights were suspended for all operations during the 58-59 winter season the fleet was parked up on the airfield. Confirmed as being present were - :
Douglas DC-3 C-47B Dakota G-AMSX
Douglas DC-3 C-47B Dakota G-AMSW
de Havilland DH-114 Heron 2 G-AOGO
de Havilland DH-114 Heron 2 G-AORJ
de Havilland DH-114 Heron 1B G-ANCI
de Havilland DH-89 Dominie IA G-AJCL

As regards Aer Lingus operations to Rhoose, they continued to use the airport for the complete period with their fleet of Dakota aircraft.
Some visits by their fleet were recorded as being during the "period" listed below -:
EI-ACE as listed above on 13/6/1952
EI-ACF between 13/6/52 and 1/1/53.
EI-ACG between 13/6/52 and 1/4/59.
EI-ACL between 13/6/52 and 1/5/58.
EI-ACM between 13/6/52 and 1/5/58.
EI-ACT between 13/6/52 and 1/5/59
EI-AFB between 13/6/52 and 1/1/58.

Also making a move from Pengam airfield were some light aircraft and noted as being a resident during December 1958 were -:

Registration Type First recorded
G-AOUYDH-82 Tiger Moth A5/12/58
G-ANHXAuster 5D3/12/58

There were limited reports for the airport at Rhoose from 1952 but the following information has been located as a result of Geoff Jones book. Thanks to Norman Atkinson for some information regarding Cambrian flights

There were several reported movements
On Mar 27,1954 there a report of an Air France aircraft landing with French supporters for the 5 Nations rugby international.
On Mar 10,1956 there was perhaps the first “large” rugby airlift to use Rhoose with Aer Lingus providing much of the capacity to take the supporters to Dublin for the game. It is reported in “Geoff Jones” book that over twenty five flights by their Dakota fleet were provided for
Mar 9 9 flights by Aer Lingus
Mar 11 number of flights by Aer Lingus

Otherwise the only other reported movement was
29/05/1958

The Gemini was operating from/to an airfield with a old airfield code of GAUK. These "G--- and M---" codes were replaced in 1959/60 era but "GAUK" remains unknown at the present time.
